Virtual Language Exchanges
Language Lab VR hosts free language exchanges every week inside their virtual reality application. People from countries around the world come to talk, meet new people, and practice speaking new languages online.
Where are the Language Exchanges?
The language exchanges are in the Language Lab VR application where people from countries around the real world come to meet each other, talk, and practice speaking the languages they are studying. Some people call it a “metaverse” or an “online language meetup”. People practice English, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, French, and many other languages. Language Lab VR is available to download for free on Meta Quest, Steam, and Pico, and the social VR events are open to anyone who wants to join.
The main environment where people meet is called “Camp Fire”. It is a forest environment where people can sit around a virtual fire and talk with each other. People can also walk around the forest and explore together. Other environments are available for language practice and learning different vocabulary, including a fast food restaurant, a pub, a grocery store, a gymnasium, and more.
When are the Language Exchanges?
The main language exchanges happen every Wednesday at 09:00, 14:00, and 21:00 EST. Other events happen at different times, so people around the world in different time zones can find a time that works best for their schedule. You can join the WhatsApp group to keep updated on the times and events.
The WhatsApp link is here: www.languagelabvr.com/whatsapp
Some users create their own WhatsApp groups to host their own language exchanges in the app as well.
How does it Work?
There are optional conversation prompts displayed that change every few minutes and provide people in the language exchange with something to talk about and discuss if they like. Sometimes, people will bring trivia questions or play games or have other planned activities. The virtual worlds are free and open for anyone to use, so hosts can plan any activities and events they like.
During the events, other people have the language they speak and the language they are learning displayed above their heads. So you can easily find language partners who speak the language you want to learn or people who are learning your native language.
Many people around the world aren’t able to meet with foreign language speakers in their city or find a language partner in their area, so these virtual language exchanges give everyone around the world an opportunity for cultural exchange, networking, and language practice from anywhere for free. You can use these meetups to meet people and practice language before you travel or live in a foreign country. Come join the community, meet new people from around the world, and improve your language ability!
